NorthShore University HealthSystem Plaza Del Lago Medical Office

Leasing the second floor of a former Crate & Barrel at historic Plaza del Lago in Wilmette created unique opportunities and design challenges for NorthShore University HealthSystem and Interwork. The Sheridan Road location has been a destination for north shore patrons since opening as ‘Spanish Court’ in 1928, making it one of the oldest shopping centers in the country. Inserting a modern medical office into this special environment required integrating a pedestrian level entry into the retail frontage and providing accessibility to the second floor. 

While providing excellent daylight for a retail atmosphere, the existing vaulted roof could not support the weight of building systems (sprinkler piping, HVAC ductwork, light fixtures, etc.). That led the team to integrate a secondary structural platform into NorthShore’s medical office model that supported those necessary systems.

Working with the expert program managers at Integrated Facilities Solutions and project managers at Berglund Construction, Interwork put NorthShore standards to work creating a 10,000 square foot suite suiting the needs of the medical practices relocating to their new lakefront location while maintaining the fabric that makes historic Plaza del Lago unique.
